DIY Reusable Exfoliating Pads

by Cath

Removing dead skins cells it’s so important to keep your face healthy. And one of the easiest (and cost-effective) ways is to mechanically exfoliate it.

I have a hard time sticking to any beauty routine, there’s so many things to do and I always have to remind myself to apply my body moisturizer and take care of my face.

While I have very sensitive skin and almost all the beauty products I try on give me small allergies, I’ve to say but I’m definitely lucky because I don’t break out often even though I don’t spend much time taking care of my face. I’m very privileged.

One of the things that I’m working on is exfoliating my face more often.

Mechanical exfoliation is great to remove dead cells and to brighten up your skin. As a bonus, skin that has been recently exfoliated tends to absorb skincare products better – which is great to make the most of what you’re using.

How many times a week should I exfoliate my face?

This varies a lot depending on your type of skin. I’ve heard that people exfoliate almost everyday!

I’ve a very sensitive skin so I only exfoliate once a week (when I do remember, I’m just awful in this kind of stuff! But I’m trying!).
If you don’t know where to start, I’d say start out once a week and increase if necessary.

How to exfoliate your face using exfoliating pads

  1. Damp your exfoliating pad with warm water. You can put your favorite cleanser in there so you can cleanse your skin at the same time! You can also use a face exfoliating product, I don’t use them myself as it’s too harsh for my skin.
  2. Using your reusable exfoliating pad, gently massage your face with circular motions.
  3. Rinse with cold/lukewarm water. Avoid hot water as your face might be too sensitive from exfoliating.
  4. Dry your face and apply your favorite face moisturizer.

I wanted to make my own exfoliating pads because I had this yarn that I had leftover but wasn’t enough for any project and I didn’t want to use disposable exfoliating pads. As someone who is trying to reduce their waste, reusable is always better than disposable, especially if you’re using material that you already have at home.

How to make your own exfoliating pads

This is a very good scrap project for every crafty person out there who has many cottons/bamboos lying around. Very quick project to do so you can whip a up a few in one afternoon.

I like to use 5mm needles so the stitches are big but not too big, this creates a nice texture to exfoliate.

You can lower the needle size if you want to make a more tight fabric to create a stronger exfoliation. Because of my sensitive skin, anything too harsh would be too hard on my face.

Gift reusable exfoliating pads!

These exfoliating pads are also great as a care gift, pair them with your homemade body moisturizer, diy body scrub for a spa kit, for your friends and family. They will love to have something made by you to pamper themselves.

Since these are super quick to make, make them as last-minute gifts with instructions on how to use them. Since this will be used in a very sensitive area just be sure to wash them before gifting as you want to guarantee that there’s no dirt or anything that it can react to.

Tools

  • Aran weight yarn – I’ve used Anchor Bamboolo, which is a blend of cotton and Rayon from Bamboo, but you can use any 100% cotton yarn.
  • 5mm knitting needles
  • Yarn needle

Instructions

  1. Using long tail cast on, cast on 32 stitches.
  2. Purl for 40 rows.
  3. Cast off
  4. Weave in the ends and you’re ready to go.

Notes

  • Make sure to wash them before using it to remove any dirt.
  • You don’t need to block them.
  • Regarding regular washing, I just wash with normal soap, throw it in the wash in a mesh laundry bag.
